"Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world."
My name is Tami Sheridan and I am doing the Geography of marilyn Monroe for a transition year project.
Her mother
Gladys Pearl Monroe was born on May 27, 1902, in Porfirio Diaz, Mexico. The family returned to California where Gladys' brother Otis was born in 1905. Their father died suffering from syphilis that on July 22, 1909. Gladys married Jasper Baker, in May 1917 and had two children, Robert Kermit Baker and Berniece Baker (Miracle) . After Gladys and Jasper divorced, he kidnapped the children and moved to Kentucky, where he had been born, according to Miracle's book My Sister Marilyn. Gladys moved there to be near her children but later returned to Los Angeles. Her son died without her ever seeing him again, however she managed to reunite with her daughter many years later.
Her father
Marilyn's biological father remains unclear. After Gladys returned to Los Angeles, she married Martin Edward Mortensen on October 11, 1924. They separated six months into their marriage, and the divorce was not finalized until over one year later. Marilyn’s birth certificate lists Gladys's second husband, Martin Edward Mortensen, as the father. Although Mortensen separated from Gladys before her daughter's birth, some people speculate he may have been the father. In an interview with Lifetime, James Dougherty, Monroe's first husband, said Norma Jeane believed that Gifford was her father. Whoever the father was, he played no part in Monroe's life. Her foster parents
Gladys placed her with foster parents Albert and Ida Bolender of Hawthorne, California, where she lived until she was seven years old.

"I was never used to being happy, so that wasn't something I ever took for granted. You see, I was brought up differently from the average American child because the average child is brought up expecting to be happy." -- MARILYN MONROE, 1954
…………
On June 19, 1942 she wed her 21-year-old neighbour James Doherty, whom she had been dating for six months.
She began her career as a model that led to an acting contract in 1946. She appeared in films such as all about eve and the asphalut jungle (1950). She progressed and her role as a “dumb blonde” used to comic effect in films such as how to marry a millionaire and gentlemen prefer blondes.
Norma Jeane found employment in the Radioplane Munitions Factory. During this time, Army photographer David Conover snapped a photograph of her for a Yank magazine article. He encouraged her to apply to The Blue Book Modeling Agency. She signed with the agency and began researching the work of Jean Harlow and Lana Turner. She was told that they were looking for models with lighter hair, so Norma Jeane bleached her brunette hair to a golden blonde.
